Singapore
A culture where East meets West

Singapore is a city filled with fascinating contrasts, diverse attractions and experiences like no other. It offers the modern and cosmopolitan while retaining its distinct local flavor and is perhaps the only city where you can go from the tranquility of the rainforest to the dazzle of critically acclaimed musicals.

In Singapore, East meets West. Singapore's multi-cultural society of over 4 million is reflected in its major ethnic groups: the Chinese (76%), Malays (13.7%), Indians (8.4%), and Eurasians and smaller minority groups (1.8%). Each of these communities celebrates its unique practices, religions and festivals, enabling all of Asia to be experienced in Singapore. The food blends the best of each Asian cuisine, and events calendar are packed with arts events, food festivals and shopping extravaganzas.

Located at one of the crossroads of the world, Singapore's strategic position has helped it grow into a major center for trade, communications and tourism. However, this country grew from humble beginning.

By the 14th century Singapore had become part of the mighty Sri Vijayan Empire and was then known as "Temasek" (Sea Town). Years later, a Sri Vijayan prince christened the island "Singa Pura" (Lion City). According to legend, the prince saw an animal he mistook for a lion and Singapore's modern name was born.

The British provided the next notable chapter in Singapore's history during the 18th century when Sir Stamford Raffles established Singapore as a trading station. The policy of free trade attracted merchants from all over Asia and from as far afield as the US and the Middle East.

In 1832, Singapore became the center of government for the Straits Settlements of Penang, Malacca and Singapore. The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 and the advent of telegraph and steamship increased Singapore's importance as a center for the expanding trade between East and West.

After World War II, Singapore became a crown colony. The growth of nationalism led to self-government in 1959 and on 9 August, 1965, Singapore became an independent republic.

Today, Singapore is the busiest port in the world with over 600 shipping line sending super tankers, container ships and passenger liners to share the busy waters with coastal fishing vessels and wooden lighters. Singapore Changi International Airport has 4,200 weekly flights to over 180 cities.

Singapore is also linked to Malaysia by two causeway bridges, and the key islands of the Riau Archipelago of Indonesia are just a quick ferry trip away. Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan and Australia are all within a 7-hour flight radius, hence giving Singapore a reputation as the "Gateway to Asia".

Singapore's excellent facilities, fascinating cultural contrasts and tourist attractions contribute to its success as a leading destination for both business and pleasure. Come and experience Uniquely Singapore and be enthralled by a vibrant dynamic city.
