Location & Brief History

Hong Kong is situated on the southeastern coast of China and spreads out over 1,110 square kilometers, including more than 260 outlying islands. The main areas are Hong Kong Island, Kowloon
Peninsula and the New Territories. Hong Kong Island lies just south of Kowloon, separated by Victoria Harbor.  The New Territories lie north of Kowloon and run up to the border with Mainland China. With a population of more than 6.9 million predominately of Chinese descent, parts of urban Hong Kong are among the most recent densely populated areas in the world. Yes, such is the diversity of Hong Kong that less than an hour's travel will take you to rural areas where people are few and far between. In 1997, Hong Kong returned to Chinese sovereignty. It is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, operating under a "one country, two systems" principle of government, and a high degree of autonomy.
